FAN SERVICE ALERT: Not a Power Rangers fan? Stop here — there are far better 2D brawlers out there.

Overview

Let me start with a disclaimer: if you're not a Power Rangers fan, stop reading. This game is pure fan service — there are far better 2D brawlers if that's what you're after. But if you grew up watching Rangers fight putties after school? Stick around. This one's for you.

I grabbed the Collector's Edition at PAX East for about $50 — trading cards, poster, steelbook (hilariously with no disc insert) and the game. Played on Switch 2, clocked 5–6 hours through the main story.

Gameplay

All five original Rangers are playable, each with their own animations and weapons — Red swings his sword, Yellow goes in with daggers. Combo through enemies to build a meter that unleashes unique ultimates: Red calls down lightning yelling 'Tyrannosaurus!', Black freezes the screen with the Mastodon. Each has flair, but mechanically you're doing the same thing regardless of who you pick.

A simple progression system — Power, Speed, Defense — each capped at four levels. Realistically you'll max one or two Rangers by the end, so pick your favorite early.

The Zord Sections

One of the highlights. Each Ranger pilots their individual Zord in on-rails shooter segments — think old-school Star Fox where you're blasting enemies, jumping, moving. It breaks up the brawler in a genuinely fun way.

The Megazord fights? That's where things fell flat. Every battle plays the same animation — first-person, just punching the monster, literally impossible to die. Build meter, summon the Power Sword, one-shot the boss, done. For what should be the most epic moment in a Power Rangers game, it's a real missed opportunity.

Green Ranger & Replayability

Finish the game and you unlock the Green Ranger — and yes, he comes with his Dragon Dagger and all the nostalgia that brings. It's a genuine reward for completing the story and gives fans a reason to go back through levels they've already cleared.

That said, he underwhelms a little in practice. He plays similarly to the other Rangers despite the hype around the character, and the lack of a unique ultimate that truly sets him apart is a missed opportunity. Still — having him in the game at all is a win, and for fans who want to see every stage through his eyes, there's real replay value here.

Beyond the Green Ranger, replayability comes down to how much you want to push your upgrade trees and chase higher combo scores. It's not a deep loop, but it's enough to pull you back for another run or two.

Pros & Cons

✓ The Good
  • Ranger models look great — true to the show
  • Fantastic soundtrack & sound effects
  • Zord on-rails sections are a blast
  • Bike segments add nice variety
  • Green Ranger unlockable adds replayability
  • Solid boss variety pulled from the show
✕ The Bad
  • Only ~4–5 enemy types — all putties
  • Megazord fights are repetitive & trivial
  • Rangers all play too similarly
  • Green Ranger underwhelms expectations
  • Story is pretty forgettable
  • Collector's Edition steelbook had no insert

Final Thoughts

Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind gave me exactly what I needed as a fan — nostalgia, solid fan service, and a genuinely fun few hours revisiting Angel Grove. It's not a deep game and it won't win over anyone who didn't grow up with the franchise. But for fans? It hits the right notes. Pick it up on Switch, PlayStation, or Steam.
